With daily media reports on Indian economy leaping with a net growth of 8% GDP every year, one is bound to feel good that our country is on the path to peace, harmony and progress. So many graduates are moving to big cities to find lucrative jobs in ever-expanding Indian market. Big international companies are setting their plant on Indian land bringing money and employment both in India.

Despite all these reports, we often ignore the plight of poor which still constitutes a major chunk of our population. With increased consumption of resources and sky-rocketing prices of basic amenities, more than quarter population finds it hard to feed their children three meals a day. While we are enjoying sumptuous meals at expensive eating joints, some unfortunate ones have to sleep with a hungry stomach. We spend hundreds to give tips to waiters, but always hesitate to donate ten rupees to a needy person. Buying expensive clothes in every season, we often forget to give a thought to those children who wear the same uniform every day.

How many times do we really know the count of coins in our wallet or purse? Probably never, then why are we so reluctant to spare a single rupee coin for those who really need it. We never regret if we lose a ten rupee note, but then why do we feel so bad if a hungry child asks us to feed him/her outside an eating joint. We need to change our mindset and be considerate toward others. If you really want to know the value of a single rupee, ask those which live on the edge every single day. Many children in our country sleep without dinner every night, while others (who are made by same God as us) are never sure will they get any food in whole day or not. Is this the India, we all want it to be?

Besides the issue of malnutrition among children, we are unaware of major issues like illiteracy and intellectual development of them. Despite so many government and voluntary measures, these problems are eating our country at Grass-root level. If not much, we still can play a very pivotal role in shaping the future of these children, which in turn will shape the future of our country. Many NGO’s run on voluntary donations ranging from single to thousands of rupees. A little charity may not affect your pocket, but can bring positive changes in lives of so many. Donating a very small amount may not be much for you, but it could be a reason to smile for many.

Sparing a single rupee from our expenses every day can help to shape the future of a child. We are born in families where our parents take care of all our expenses, what about those who don’t have parents or whose parents don’t earn much to feed them. If we are given this opportunity to lend a helping hand to our younger brothers and sisters, we should take the initiative. Try donating a rupee from your daily expenses. A little help from your side can improve the lives of many.

Famous writer Thomas Fuller once said, “Charity begins at home, but it should not end there”. Let’s spread this message in every corner of our community. Let’s save a rupee every day and play a small role for a bright future of these young children.

The above photograph is of Vinita,age 13, a girl child our literacy centre located in a village Mahabadia, distt.Bhopal.Vinita is a regular student of our literacy centre and is a fast learner.She earns Rs.400=00 per month by throwing cow dung of aldnlord of the village.Ahambhumika is making best possible efforts to provide at least basic edcuation to the underpriviledged girl childrn like Vinita.

This is Jyoti,age 5 years.She lost her father when she was in the womb of her mother.After few months of her birth her mother went to live with some one else leaving behind Joyoti on the mercy of her grand mother . Now Jyoti lives with her grand mother.Her grand mother is aged enough and can not take proper care of Jyoti.Jyoti attends our literacy classes regularly. We are looking for the best possible options for the girls like Jyoti so that they could be cared properly.

An effort to spread the Fragrance of Education through Mahak

Jawaharlal Nehru had once said-"Educate a man and you educate one person. Educate a woman and you educate the whole family."

Female Education in India is not a gift of modern civilization. In olden days women excelled in the sphere of education and hence the goddess of learning was conceived of as a female who was popularly known as “Saraswati”, which is followed even today. However in earlier days, the traditional value of girl education in India was to enable her to be more competent in running the household, especially motherhood and to be able to give children a better upbringing. Nowadays when it is becoming more and more vital for women to be at par with men, education of women makes available to the country a wealth of capacity that is now largely wasted through lack of opportunity. This will result in fuller and effective utilization of human resources and raising the standard of living.

But inspite of such progressive approaches, there are many reasons female education never gets the importance it deserves like, Gender based Inequality, Occupation of Girls as cheap Domestic Help, parents' fear of physical Exploitation or abuse at schools.

Hence some extra effort is needed to encourage girls to get educated, especially from the poorer section of the society. Mahak is one such initiative by Ahambhumika.

Mahak is the name of a voluntary non-profit education institute set-up by Ahambhumika to facilitate education the daughters of labourers of the village of Mahabadia, Bhopal. Many may raise a question that why such a favor is just being done to the girls. The answer is that Mahak is an extra effort meant to assist educating girls in the rural areas where their education usual takes a backseat for more reasons than one.

At Mahak we are making basic efforts to spread literacy among the daughters of the labourers of Mahabadia, who otherwise would've never been able to go to school. Usually such girls are supposed to take care of the house when their parents are off to work at younger age and join their parents in their labour to earn an extra penny when they get older.

We began by trying to convince the parents about the benefits of educating their daughter and how it would help them in housework as well as their labour in future. We explained how they'll be able to demand a better pay for their labour if they are educated enough. After much persuasion most of them agreed to send their daughters to our school for a short period of two hours everyday from 3:00 pm to 5:00pm.

With an initial start-off of 22 girls from the age group of 5 to 12, Mahak has been a decent success till now. We have started with teaching them reading and writing Hindi and basic Arithmetic and hope to progress in this as well. Shortly we will also start drawing and painting activity to make these imitative child friendly.

The initiative is run all by us without any major sponsorship. Hence any help assisting us in enhancing the amount of education we are providing right now to the girls will be really helpful. Currently our basic requirements comprise of dresses, stationery and drawing materials like notebooks, pencils, wax colours, drawing books, drawing copies for writing and drawing.

Any little help from you will help us give the girls a better future with the help of education.

Mahak- an education centre for girl child of stone crushers in a village near Bhopal

These are the photographs of “Mahak” ( Flavour).An education centre started by us for the girl child of stone crushers of a villagenamely Mahabadia near Bhopal. These girl child have never been to school and they look after the household work after their parents are off to the field. We are providing them initially basic education of reading and writing Hindi and Artihmetic.These education centre started functioning from 11.12.2011.We also intend to add some interesting activities like doll making,art and craft etc.shortly. The main thought behind these initiative to make these girl child literate. I am not a writer at all but I can not restrain myself from expressing my happiness after starting this intitaive.We had a lot of discussion with the parents of these girl child to send them to this education centre for a period of 2 hours from 3.00 to 5.00 PM every day .The age group of these girl child is 5 to 12 years and at present 22 girl child have joined.Ahambhumika will provide them stationery materials, bags ,books and footwear’s. Shortly we will also provide them sweaters and dresses, skipping ropes and , few other games . And these whole initiative is not at all funded by any Corporate or government. There are many pre-conceived notions related to volunteering and social networking among us. We think that volunteering can be only done by going to the NGO. But volunteering goes beyond our physical presence. Commitment has no boundaries.

We think that Social networking is just for sharing photos that we took from our recent Goa trip. But a person named Shawn Ahmed (he goes by the handle @uncultured on twitter) creates awareness and funds through social media and recently, due to his efforts he was invited to Davos. Social media is no longer a platform for frustrated arm-chair activists. A single retweet or a single share on facebook can connect a donor to the NGO.

Aham Bhumika is a Bhopal based registered NGO started by few like -minded people .We need volunteers to spread a word about various charitable activities and campaigns of Aham Bhumika.

If you spend some time on social networking sites like twitter and facebook you can volunteer for us from home.

Almost a year back, I accidentally came in contact with Subrat Goswami. We had a small meeting few days after Diwali and Subrat in his modest style explained about his efforts to form a small group of motivated people who work in suburban villages of Bhopal for betterment of women and children. So I got introduced to Ahambhumika, which Subrat hates to call NGO (he prefers calling it a group of motivated people instead). I guess that was the reason I was able to bypass my immense reluctance towards NGOs and meet Subrat with an open mind.

In the meeting which lasted just a little over half an hour, Subrat proposed to host a photo exhibition, with the aim of gathering public support for Ahambhumika. This eventually kept our extra official hours busy for almost next 6 months. We finally hosted the exhibition in May (2011). Along with many dignitaries who attended the exhibition, I met students of grain school, the women of a small village called Mahabadi in the rural suburbs of Bhopal.

Over the past one year, Subrat and I kept on exchanging our thoughts regularly. Although being in Bangalore I tried to be a part of Ahambhumika as much I can but it was only during my visit to Bhopal this Diwali I got the chance to visit the Grain School.

The School is set up in the village of Mahabadia at local Anganwadi. Ride to village is not a very smooth one as the approach road is quite rough. In the evening when there are no Anganwadi activities, the grain school classes are held from 7 to 8 PM on weekends. Subrat and his sister Kavita are the permanent teachers and occasionally some volunteers visit to take special classes.

We were there well before 6.30 PM and even though the class was supposed to start at 7 PM the attendance was very good soon after we arrived. I saw many familiar faces; I had met these women in the photo exhibition.

Their humble hospitality was the first thing that I noticed. I was greeted by everyone. They all came very well dressed and well prepared for the class. I guess over the past one year, it has become their daily socializing activity and I could see that they cherish it.

It has been a year since the current batch (the first batch) of the school started. The concept was simple, educate women of the village in some basic literacy and provide them with grains as incentive to attend the classes, so they don’t drop out of school in their struggle for basic necessities. Initially the 1st standard CBSE curriculum was adopted. Some books donated by Parham (http://www.pratham.org/) were also added later. Towards the end of it (as I write this) some vocational training was also included in the curriculum. The class which I visited was a knitting class where Kavita Ji was teaching the women how to knit Sweaters and mufflers.

The grains school has a pretty good attendance record. 30kg of grains (wheat and rice) per month is given to every woman attending the school regularly. The grain stock is accumulated entirely by the collection campaigns at the schools of Bhopal and generous donations from Ahambhumika well wishers and supporters. There has been no funding involved in the entire activity.

These women or Mahabadia, are now able to read news paper in Hindi, they read children story books and enjoy them, they can write (and not just their names but much more), they can even do basic arithmetic enough to multiply, add and subtract and understand their applications in real life scenario like basic household accounting. They can also knit sweaters and woolen wears for their dear ones. While I was there, one of the students, Santo, proudly exhibited a woolen cap she just completed in the class. It was no less than a novel invention for her. I also got to look at her notebook. Considering the fact that just a year ago, she was completely illiterate; anybody will be surprised to see her writing.

This batch of grain school is completing its tenure now. A year back, when Ahambhumika started the school, these women were completely illiterate. However their will to learn was strong back then and now even more so. Subrat told me that he was even threatened by a village man against teaching his wife. It was only because of the support of these women, especially Kamala Ji (in whose home the Anganwadi and the grain school is hosted), Ahambhumika was able to continue the school. Over the year, the effort has gathered tremendous respect amongst villagers. The effort has been supported by the Gram Sarpanch as well.

As we were about to leave, Kamala ji insisted that we must have some tea. Before we could say no, it was already served. Generally tea is served with extra sugar near around here but I guess she knew that the city people do not like too much sugar so it was served with exactly the amount of sugar I like. I could not help writing these last few lines. The hospitality of these women of Mahabadia is as warm as their curiosity to learn. I hope the next time I visit Bhopal I will have a chance to learn from them a little bit .

New ... New .... New clothes & new books

29th October 2011 was a memeorable day for us. On this date we distributed new clothes to children of primary school of village Bodakho.Though to few.These clothes were sent to us by generous people from Delhi and Indore.On the same day we also distributed Drawing books sent to us by the people by courier.I have posted few photographs above. How long we could keep continue the endeavours of Ahambhumika ?

Last 2 days were the days of introspection for me during brief period of illness. It gave me plenty of time to think and re-think on why sould have endeavour like Ahambhumika ? The simple answer was that because we are privileged and could contribute something to the underprivileged people of the society. But the question which constantly haunted me was that how long we could continue like this, asking people to donate? Still thinking on it !!!

Let us go back for a while.Ahambhumika, an NGO comprising of few like minded people in Bhopal was formed in the year 2007.We started with the collection of clothes during Kosi flood in Bihar and later on we kept continue this initiative and added collection of toys,books etc. . The clothes, toys,books thus collected were provided to the school children of rural villages . The scenario of rural India is undoubtedly shocking. Still there are no roads, electricity, drinking water and many more essentials required for the day to day life. The school children of the rural villages which we unearthed won’t have even proper clothes. They wear torn and shabby clothes.We begin to provide them clothes from time to time. Because people donate clothes in plenty. We even collected clothes door to door carrying them on our motor cycles from one end of the city to another. Later on we made collection campaign of clothes and during sorting we found that people have even donated their used undergarments ,which are of no use at all. Many people joined us in last three + years of journey while many left us. How long people could remain associated with us by spending their own fuel and time ? But that is a different issue, we with few handful of people are still making efforts. We raised some fund through social networking sites to keep continue our initiatives. Spent many sleepless nights preparing posts to donate, spent plenty of time on Twitter repeatedly tweeting to donate us, support us .Many followers unfollowed us due to this while on the other hand many extended their constant support with cash and kind to us. I am obliged to all for this.

But nothing much has been changed till date. We have not been able to provide sufficient clothes to the children of the schools we have selected .But still efforts are on. I don’t know how much we will succeed but the determination has never been lacking with me. I know the road I have chosen is tuff. After spending due to time my office where I am working to earn bread for my family, keep continue the initiatives of Ahambhumkia is nevertheless tough but there is no way out. I can not leave the rural children of the schools, whom we have chosen to provide clothes, on the mercy of god to whom nobody of us has seen. Will share more about us in the times to come. On 31.07.2011 Sarees were distributed to the underpriviledged women of village Mahabadia,Bhopal.Most of the women are student of Grain School (For Grain School details http://ahambhumika.org ).Besides them few aged women too were provided sarees. These sarees were gifted to Ahambhumika by a generous women who won't wants here to ne named.We are obliged to our donor, hats off to her.Support us in spreading words.

An appeal to celebrate 64th India Independence day by supporting needy kids of a village

They have never been to city. They have never seen a train, movie, museum or a zoo. Their life is limited to their village.Their village is still inaccessible during rains. They won’t have electricity. Every year they lost some of their near and dears due to snake bite. There is no dispensary. They cannot afford even a piece of soap. The water they drink is dirty.They won’t have proper clothes to wear.They are habitual of living in dust & dirt.Off course I am talking about the kids of a village namely Bodkaho,distt.Bhopal. This tribal village is hardly 17 Kms away from the heart of Bhopal. One of our volunteer Shri Ashutosh Baranwal Twitter handle @MainKhuda who visited this village with his counterpart is the eye witness of the plight of the kids of this village.And we are going to celebrate 64th India Independence Day on 15th August of 2011.

What we are doing here : From time to time Ahambhumika provides clothes to the kids of this village. We collect clothes from the people of Bhopal. Our generous supporters who are on Twitter too used to send us clothes, books etc. by courier.

We provide books,toys,stationery articles to the children coming to the primary school of this village.There are 65 children( age group 5 to 10 years) in the primary school and around 60 children( Age group 0 to 4 years ) in Anganwadi centre of this village.

1. Last year Bhopal witnessed tremendous cold. The nights were like a nightmare for the children of this village.We won’t had woolen clothes .The teacher of this village school advised us to provide two pair of shirts paints to the each children of this village so that he/she could be less affected by cold by wearing two pair of clothes at a time. Our Plan : Presently we are aiming to set up a small library in this village. Efforts are on

One more supporter from Twitter @discopiggu Ms.Arundhati have couriered books which are on the way. We are thankful to all these generous people.

By 15th August we are hopeful to set up the library in this small village bringing cheer to the underprivileged tribal kidson the eve of 64th India Independnce Day .

Misson : Since we are not funded by any corporate or government we are not at all aiming high.Our mission will be fulfilled even if we could support the underprivileged kids of few villages by providing basic material detailed below.

Distribution of clothes and pulses

Friends, find below the photographs of distribution of clothes and pulses made on 30.07.11.The clothes were distributed to the Anganwandi Centres of two villages, namely Chottakheda & Kalapani,distt.Bhopal.From time to time Ahambhumika distribute clothes to the undepriviledegd children of the villages located at the outskirts of Bhopal.The photographs are the testimonial of the fact that how important could be the used clothes of yours for these underpriviledged village children.

Besides this, pulses was also distributed to few aged women of village Kalapani to support them.These women are hand to mouth and are not in a position to earn a substantial amount to meet out their day to basic needs.

Distribution of Grain & Pulses

On 19th June 2011 distribution of Grain was made to the women of Grain School.This time besides wheat, we were also able to distribute pulses to these women.This all was possbile due to donation by our supporters.Distribution of 30 kg. of wheat, 3 kg of rice and 2 kg of pulses was made to each women enrolled as student of Grain School.In view of the rainy season ahead most of the women would not be able to go to their work as the brick kilns and stone quarries are already closed.The costruction work has also been slowed down.Since most of the women won't have earnings,they will reamin in home ideal.The distribution of Grain and pulses would be of immense help for them as well as for their family. And to utilize their time in a propoer way we have started kntting classes from this week so that they could knit during rainy season.

These women and adolsecent girls 25 in numbers belong to the underpriviledged section of the society and are the inhhabitants of a village namely Mahabadia,distt.Bhopal.They work as daily wage labourer in stone quarries,brick kilns and construction sites for paltry wages.During evening they attend basic literacy classes run by "Ahambhumika"where they are taught Hindi writing and reading and do some Arithmetic.As incentive for attending literacy classes regularly they are provided certain quantity of Grain every month.The whole intitiave is being carried out with the support of our generous individuals.Do support us by spreading words.

Knitting classes for Grain School women

From 18th June 2011 we have strated training of knittting to the women of Grain School.Total 14 women and 03 girls joined knitting classes and have shown keen interest. We are planning to make them well versed in knittting as early as possible so that they could knit sweaters for their kids to start with .Those who would show more interest, we will try our best to make the necessary arrangement for their professional training so that in future they could knit customized sweaters and earn some amount.

1st test of Grain School women

Above are the few photographs of Grain School women who had their 1st test examination on 29.05.11.They have been learning Hindi writing and reading and Atithemetic since November 2011.All of them were excited for the test.In all 16 women appeared in the 1st test held yesterday.The test was an attempt to assess what they have learned and also an assesment for us that where we need to improve while teaching them further.This test was further aimed to boost thier morale.All of these women have never been to school earlier.Support them and wish them good luck please so that they could progress further and could be self reliant and edcuated up to some extent.They are living a very tuff life,working as daily wage labourer.But they have proved that they are very good learner in spite of all odds in their day to day life.To know further about Grain School please visit our earlier posts and also web site http//ahambhumika.org

Noteworhty to mention here is that our Grain School initiative is not funded by Government or Corporate.This whole initiative is being run with the help of individual contribution.At present we are supported by one of our well wisher Mr. Kapil Dhawan.He has been sponsoring the Grain School for the last 4 months.We are obliged to him.

These women shown above works as daily wage labourer in birck kilns,construction sites and stone quarries.For them life is no doubt very tuff but despite all odds they are attending basic litercay classes regulalrly and are good learner.We are proud of them.All of them had never been to school during their childhood and at present after constant reading and writing since last 6 months most of them could now read and write in Hindi.Moreover few of them have learnt tables up to 12.Its a great achievement for them and for us too.

Donate Hindi books for adult women

Friends,the Grain School women have completed 4 months of basic literacy classes in Hindi .As you know that Grain School is an initiative of educating underpriviledged rural women.They work as daily wage labourer in brick quilns,construction sites and stone quarries for paltry wages.As an incentive to attending lietracy classes held regularly from 6.30 PM 8.00 PM, they are provided 30 kg of wheat & 3 kg of rice every month.This also supports their family. The whole initiative is being run with the support of few individuals.

Till date we have taught them through Hindi books of standard 1 and we are still searching for the books on adult litercay.These women have now learnt the vernaculars and few of them could read Hindi text books fluently.Now we need books for them.

At the moment we need story books,text books,cartoon books in Hindi for these women.If you have any book in Hindi which is lying unused & you deem propoer for these women please courier it to us.

Every support by you matters a lot for us.Evary donation of book would help us in our endeavour of building a small library which will serve the purpose of education to not only these women but also to their school going children.

Grain School - An effort to educate daily wage labourers with Grain

GRAIN SCHOOL - AN EFFORT TOWARDS LITERACY

Above are the few photographs of Grain School.The women of this school are stone crushers & daily wage labourers working in brick kilns.They had never thought that some day they would be able to learn basics.On completion of 2 months of learning HIndi vernaculars with the slates & chalks,recently they have been provided pencil & copy to write.Now they are more cofident.Now in the ration shop they won't put their thumb impressions.They make their signautre.Few of them have started reading Hindi.And the journey is on. As an incentive for attending basic literacy classes these women are provided certain quantity of Grain.And it is a well known fact that one can not teach an empty stomach.
To connect them with outer world we need computers.Any one's kind gesture to donate desktop / laptop (old but workable ) is most welcome.

Bhagwati,how you will feed your malnourished baby ?

Friends, this is the tale of Bhagwati.Aged around 22 years of village Mahabadia.She is a regular student of our Grain School.Bhagwati is married to Chain Singh, a love marriage, resulting to bycott by her family.She has a daughter Bharti ( 6 months ) who is malnourished.Seven months ago her husband took a loan of Rs.12,000/- from owner of a brick kiln to give the amount to his brother in law,who required it to meet out few expenses during his sister's marriage.As the matter was related to the marriage of his own sister Bhagwati too happily agreed uopn it.When Bhagwati went to attend the marriage her parents did not allowed her to enter in to the house, she returned with heavy heart.Later on she learnt that her brother has not utilized the amount loaned by her husband for the purpose her borther had sought (marriage of his sister) instead he had spent that amount in drinking.Since the loan has to be paid back Bhagwati and her husband are now engaged in the brick kilns and preparing bricks.For their day to day needs, they have to borrow some amount from the onwer of the brick kiln.With in a period of seven months they have a debt of Rs.42,000/- over their head.They will be paid Rs.300/- for preparing 1000 bricks.God knows when they would be able to repay the loaned amount which is increasing day by day.Bhagwati and her husband are toling hard to re pay the loan.His brother too is with themhelping them in preparing bricks but they have doubts that at any day he may fled away.

Bhgwati often won't have anything to eat.She attends Grain School regularly as some qunatity of Grain is provided here to every student monthly.Bhagwati is aneimic and her baby is underweight, she won't have milk to feed her daughter.Grain School suports her by providing some extra quantity of Grain.But how long ???We are making efforts for some respectable livelihood for the women like Bhagwati.You too could join us in this journey of rural India.

This year winter Bhopal was chilling.For the needy villagers who won't have proper clothes, this winter in particulars was one of the worst.But with the help of our supporters we were fortunate enough to have some sweaters and blankets.People even from different cities sent sweaters through courier to us.We are obliged to them for the support.Though we required more sweaters particularly for the children in the age group ranging from 0 to 06 years.But any how we got tremendous support.

For blankets we are obliged to Ms.Mitali Chatterjee, from Bhopal who donated 16 new brand blankets.These blankets & sweaters were distributed to the villagers of Mahabadia,distt.Bhopal.Avode are the few pictures of distribution.

We had a great beginning of 2011. We distributed sweaters and sports material to the students of Anganwadi in the Tribal village Bodakho Distt. Bhopal. The sweaters were sent by our supporter Mamta Singh (Qatar). The sports equipments were sent by Ayushi Baranwal (New Delhi). Please take a look at these pics to see how happy these children look. The only way we could think of for starting this Email was by “Thanking” you all. So, Thank You to all of you from the bottom of our heart.

It’s only your support that has made Aham Bhumika a success and helped us bring some change to lives of our fellow countrymen in rural India.

To sum up 2010:

This year happened to be the best year for Ahambhunmika since its inception i.e. 2007. There are reasons to say that year 2010 as the best year for the organization. Earlier we used to collect clothes, bicycles, books, stationery, shoes, toys etc. and distribute them to the needy villagers and Anganwadi children. We used to collect these materials on number of occasions even from door-to-door.

The idea of Grain School:
During distribution we felt that besides clothes there are people who even won't have handful of grain to eat twice a day and they are illiterate to know anything about the various Government welfare schemes meant for them. We got this idea to collect grain from us the privileged middle class / upper class people and use this to benefit the rural underprivileged by asking them (preferably women) to attend literacy classes lieu of a certain monthly quota of Grain.

Consequently we launched a campaign for the collection of Grain. We approached 10 schools of Bhopal and out of the 10 schools 8 schools joined us happily. These schools supported us in a great way and as a result we were able to collect around 20 quintals of Grain during a period of one month.

Our volunteer Niharika Mishra from Kolkata prepared poster for Grain collection while the logo was designed by Arlne Grace.

Subsequently from 15th of November 2010 we started our Grain School. So from clothes to grain it was tedious journey but we are happy that 20 women of a village Mahabadia, district Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh, India) who work as construction worker on the sites and in the brick kilns now attend basic literary classes regularly. The plan is to first teach these women to read, write and do arithmetic and then continue the school as a study circle where they learn various other skills relevant to improving their livelihoods. We also intend to make them aware of the various welfare schemes government runs for them and the RTI act. The whole idea is to make them self-reliant and aware of their social importance.

Use of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter has bought a paradigm change to our support base. People for around the country have helped us and some even visited Aham Bhumika and our Grain School to see and understand what we’re doing.

Ashutosh & Mridula (husband & wife) both IT professionals from New Delhi paid a visit to the tribal village Bodakho and the "Grain School" at Mahabadia. Incidentally the first grain distribution was made in their presence. They brought number of sarees with them from Delhi to Bhopal for the women of Grain School. Earlier we hesitated to ask to people for monetary donations. They suggested that we should goto our support base (i.e. the people of India) and ask them for monetary support even if in small amounts.

Ashutosh now is an active member of our team and helps us with our several campaigns

Just a few days back Grain School had another visitor. Sneha Vashist a student of Journalism from Sophia College, Mumbai paid a visit to Grain School.

Pranay Diwan, Ludhiyana, Punjab sent us 20 new cardigans for the women of Grain School.

Sushmita Rao, Mumbai sent us sarees by courier and is know helping us in our online campaigns.

Mrs. Mamata Sing, Qatar sent us stationery material, clothes and 20 new brand sweaters for the tribal children of Bodakho. She has provided us constant moral support and has been our guardian angle.

Sujoy Mukherjee, Vivek Verma, Jignesh Parikh, Prof. Anil Aneja, Akesh Soni made monetary contributions. It was because of them that we didn’t only achieve but exceed our monthly fund collection target of INR 10,000 for the month of December, 2010.

Anoop Saini, Rahul Gupta, Dhruv Nagapal and Mrs Kaml Goyal sent us a big parcel of clothes. We are obliged to them for their awesome support.

We meet Rahul Nayak who has shouldered the responsibility of organizing a fund raising Photo Exhibition for the Grain School.

Vipin Sharma and his company the IT Genie Group designed our fund raising poster and are now helping us with our website design and hosting.

We also thank you our many other supporters on social media whose support on Twitter which went beyond just 'following us' and liking us on Facebook.

We’re now registered under Section 12 (A) of Income Tax Act and would soon be eligible for 80 (G) tax exemptions.

Plans for 2011:

We intend to open few more Grain Schools for the few women and drop out adolescent girls whom we can not accommodate in the current school due constraint of Grain Stock (the 20 quintals of Grain we’ve can only support presently enrolled 20 women for next three months)
We plan to run some health camps in the villages.
We’ll continue with out endeavour of supporting rural/ tribal children in Anganwadis.

To achieve all this we need your support. Please continue with your support in whatever way possible.

Tulsa Bai, whose hunsband is absconding

This post is all about Tulsa Bai. She is one of the student of Grain School.Aged around 28 - 30 (She does not know her age) lives in a village, Mahabadia and works as a casual labourer in the field or on construction site, wherever she gets work. She was married 10 years back with Shankar.Her husband Shankar had borrowed a sum of Rs.12,000.00 for his marriage and mortgaged himself to a landlord for one year. They had two sons – Prem Singh (8 years) and Chotu (6 years).When Chotu was few months old Shankar suddenly disappeared from the field where he was working. The father of Tulas bai searched every where but Shankar was not traceable. No FIR was lodged as the poor family could not afford to pay bribe for lodging FIR. Shankar husnband of Tulsa bai is still absconding and both of his sons does not go to school as Tulsa Bai leaves home early in the morning to work for the livelihood of her family. This lady who is strong enough won’t talks much when asked , why she won’t deposit some amount which she earns and try to got her sons enrolled in school. She says’,”itne paise kahan milte hain jo bank main rakhun.Aur bacche,kuch din school gaye the.Par bad main jana chod diya.”

Tulsa bai who goes to work daily early in the morning at 8.00 A.M. returns to her village around 5.30 PM and regularly attends “Grain School” to further support her family as certain qunantity of Grain is provided to the women who regularly attend basic literacy classes by "Ahambhumika". She is learning fast, speaks less and is committed.

These cardigans are of immense help for the needy women who won’t have proper woollen clothes to wear during severe winter. We are thankful to Pranay for his support. Why Start a Grain School?

The village of Mahabadia is situated 17 kms from the city of Bhopal on the Kolar Road. It is a village dominated by influential rich landowners who own most of the land. There are mostly Other Backward Class, Dalit and Adivasi people in the village who are landless and have to work on the farms of the influential people for paltry wages. They also do backbreaking labour in stone quarries and brick kilns which makes them ill.
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme is supposed to provide each household with 100 days of work annually. However, the reality is that in 2009-10 only three households out of the total of 162 households received a total of 42 days of employment. This works out to 14 days of work for each of the three households. What is even more of a concern is that if the 159 households who did not get work are taken into account then the average work offered per household comes to only 0.25 days. ( Calculated on the basis of data on the MGNREGS website - http://www.nrega.nic.in).
When this is the level of apathy of the government to the plight of the poor then civil society has to step in. That is exactly what Ahambhumika has done by acting as a conduit to link the poor of Mahabadia village to the privileged sections of Bhopal city. It is well known that poor households can overcome their poverty only when the women become educated. The Grain School is aimed at doing just this. The students of the following schools in Bhopal have contributed 20 quintals of grain and pulses to fund this effort -
1. Delhi Public School - 4 quintals
2. St. Theresa's Girls School - 4 quintals
3. St. Xavier's School - 1 quintal
4. Billabong High School - 1 quintal
5. St. Paul's School - 4 quintal
6. Bonnie Foi School - 1 quintal

8. Queen Mary's School - 4 quintal
A total of twenty poor women- 14 from the Daroi adivasi community, 1 from the Korku adivasi community, 4 from the Other Backward Class Banjara community and 1 from the Muslim community are studying in this school. Given their need to work during the day and also take care of the domestic responsibilities these women do not have time to study. That is why the Grain School provides them with 20 kgs of wheat, 3 kgs of rice and 1 kg of pulses per month to study. The village ASHA worker is given 50 kgs of wheat, 10 kgs of rice and 2 kgs of pulses to teach these women. The school has commenced from 15th November 2010 and is running well.
The plan is to first teach these women to read, write and do arithmetic and then continue the school as a study circle where they learn various other skills relevant to improving their livelihoods. It has been rightly said that development should mean giving someone a fishing rod and teaching her to fish rather than giving her fish to eat continually. This is precisely what the Grain School is doing by teaching the poor women of Mahabadia the skills that will enable them to put their precarious livelihoods on a sustainable footing.
The great thing about this effort is that it has roped in the children of privileged sections of society to contribute to the development of the under-privileged. Where the government has failed to fulfill its mandate to provide welfare services to the poor civil society has stepped in to fill the gap in a commendable way.

"Ahambhumika" is a Bhopal based NGO.The members of the NGO are from different walks of life and all of them are working to support their family and besides that utilzing quality .time for the social activities.The NGO is registered under Socities Registration Act and also under Section 12 (A) of the Income Tax Act.The NGO collect clothes,toys & books and provide the same to the underpriviledged children,women and widows of rural India . Recently the NGO has formed a "Grain Bank". People are encouraged to donate grain like rice,wheat & pulses for the disadvantaged people of rural India.The grain thus collected will be provided to the needy widows,children living in the villages. Besides that the illiterate women of the villages will be taught basic Hindi reading & writing and as an incentive for attending literacy classes they will be provided grain. The NGO has started one such class in a village namely Mahabadia, distt.Bhopal. Most of the women of these village works as construction labourer and during evening time they attend theliteracy classes. There are many adolescent girls too in this village who have never been to school due to domestic reasons and poverty. They too could be taught basic Hindi reading & writing. But since we won’t have much quantity of grain we are not able to accommodate them.To scale up this work and publicize our effort this exhibition is organized in Bhopal.

As you know Aham Bhumika isn’t funded by the government or any corporate, we started it as a people movement and we want it to remain that. So, here we’re asking you again.

It is because of your exemplary support we’ve been able to come this far with our initiatives. We’ve successfully carried out Bicycle donation, we’re helping village schools and we’re running our own Grain school for village women. We’ve been able to do all this because of cloths, grains, books, stationary and bicycles provided by you. We’re planning to scale up our operation, start a few more grain school, and get involved with some more villages. Till now our scope was limited and hence we could manage with donation of items but now as we plan to include some more villages, we would also require funds. We’re sure you all would continue to support us in our fund raising campaign the way you’ve done in the past with other campaigns.

Grain School is an initiative by Aham Bhumika to make village women self-reliant. The plan is to first teach these women to read, write and do arithmetic and then continue the school as a study circle where they learn various other skills relevant to improving their livelihoods. It has been rightly said that development should mean giving someone a fishing rod and teaching her to fish rather than giving her fish to eat continually. This is precisely what the Grain School is doing by teaching the poor women the skills that will enable them to put their precarious livelihoods on a sustainable footing.

To ensure attendance is regular to the school Aham Bhumika provide women a monthly quota of Grain. As these women work as daily wage labors, grain provided to them eases their burden of earning and hence ensures their better participation in the school.

Till now we’ve collected the grains from various schools of Bhopal. Looking at demand for enrolment in Grain School we urgently need to start another batch ASAP. We need your support to do this. Our expense for running the Grain School is around Rs. 12,000/- per month and we need to operate at least for six months till we can put it on self-sustainable mode. Hence, the total approx. expense would be around 72,000, and as you’re our sponsors here we’re asking you donations.

Our trip with Aham Bhumika: a life changing experience for us

My incidental tryst with Aham Bhumika happened on twitter. I saw on twitter some requests for donating old/ new sarees, request for supporting a grain program. Out of interest I spoke with them. Few things which I instantly liked about Aham Bhumika were, it is run by people who have full time jobs and this NGO is just their way to give back to the society. They're not funded by the Government or any big organization and it’s purely an effort of some individuals.

Since long, I was looking for an NGO to associate with and Aham Bhumika seemed to me the ideal one, only problem there work area was Bhopal.

Few days later, as I was scouting for a holiday destination, it suddenly appeared to me why not goto Bhopal and meet these amazing people. Wife agreed, so we were all set. At that time, Aham Bhumika needed sarees for donating to Village women of their Grain School, we decided to collect some and take them along.

In the fascinating city of Bhopal, we meet Subrat and Yogesh from Aham Bhumika. I can very well say that they were the two most inspiring people I've ever meet. Running an NGO despite keeping onto their full time jobs is no ordinary feat. They travel to remotest villages on their bikes (these are places where you can't take a four wheeler). Armed with their grit resolution they goto these villages talk to villagers, assess their needs and with their limited means do the best to help.

Aham Bhumika has run and is running some very innovative campaigns. Some of their most interesting campaigns are-

• Providing clothes, sports equipments, story books to children studying in remote villages primary schools.

• A bicycle donation campaign has been successfully run by people of Aham Bhumika.

• The most interesting caimpaigns is of educating village women in Lieu of Grain. Their plan is to provide them some vocational training after completion of basic literacy.

We accompanied Subrat & Yogesh to two of the villages where they're running their programs. Not knowing, it would prove to be a life changing trip for us. We went to a village called Bodakho around 15 K.M. from Bhopal. This village is 4 K.M.s away from any kind of road. Aham Bhumika is working with a school of this village to help improve lives of the village children and villagers. Because of Aham Bhumika efforts this village school got an Aganwadi status from the government. Aganwadi status means now children between 0-5 and pregnant women get some food and nutritious items from the government. So deep rooted is our corruption that even that food is some time stolen and never reaches the Aganwadi.

We meet two amazing teachers at this school who should be called the heroes of India. They work on salay of Rs. 2500 per month and yet have unmatched dedication to their work. They come to the school braving the weather and almost non-existent roads ridding their own bikes spending their own money on Fuel. One thing which Subrat told me is only because of their effort 1 bright student from this village got admission into a Navodya Vidayalya. What Aham Bhumika is trying to do is make this school and other such schools a better experience for these village children. They provide these students with clothes, story books, are planning to design a toilet block so that more girls are encouraged to come to school and are planning to get these some very basic sports equipment. Some story books or some small sports equipment like football, flying disks or skipping ropes could be great value addition to lives of these children. Their whole idea is to motivate children for education.

A little money from us can help boost their campaigns and bring a change to several lives. Think about it a children story book purchased by you in 10-20 bucks might just help and motivate a child to read and study further.

A hundred rupee by you might get them rag carpets on the floor and save them from ice cold floors during chilly winters. Is there a better way to spend your money?

We distributed some biscuits and candies to the school children. Around 300 bucks from us could bring smile on 40 faces. I've never spent my money better.

A random thought appeared to my mind, expenditure on education of a single child studying in one of those posh schools can actually transform lives of around 100 children in such villages.

The next village we went to is called Mahabadiya. Thankfully the village is accessible by road and has electricity too. Most women in this village work as stone crushers. Since no parent is at home children hardly go to school, the elder one's look after the younger children. Aham Bhumika is doing amazing innovative work. They're teaching these women in lieu of grain. Each woman who comes to attend the classes is given 20 Kg of wheat, some rice and pulses each month. It has been just 10 days and all these women can now write their names and Hindi alphabets to some extent. Aham Bhumika has plans to provide them some vocational training and help them earn better in a more human way. A literate mother can definitely give her family a better life. They also have plans to replicate this model in other villages.

The best things about Aham Bhumika were the personal level involvement of its members. They knew all women students of their grain school by name. They almost have a personal bond with these women. Same holds true for the children of Bodakho, they knew all the children by their name and shared a personal bonding with them.

Moreover, I loved the main objective of Aham Bhumika which is to provide basic support to underprivileged and make them self sufficient.

While the rich of our country are shinning there are a huge number of Indians who're not shinning at all and in fact, are moving into worst conditions. Around 70% of our country people still live at an income of less than Rs. 20 per day. I don't know how much we can change but if we all can lend our little support to Mr. Subrat and Aham Bhumika, I'm sure we'll make it successful movement and transform some of these lives.

P.S. It’s been a week since we got back to Delhi but we can’t get over our visits to Bodakho and Mahabadiya. The best thing about these places was I didn’t find people cribbing. They were doing toughest possible jobs and earning so less still were content. It was a remarkable change for us from ever cribbing middle class to meet these people. We’ve decided to visit these places at least 3-4 times a year.

Nutrition for Rural Women

Despite India’s rapid economic progress, rural India has earned one of the most unenviable statuses of having one of the lowest per capita calorie consumption worldwide. Eventually this translates to poor nutrition as well. In a 2008 publication entitled, ‘Comparisons of hunger across states: India State Hunger Index’, authored by Purnima Menon, Anil Deolalikar and Anjor Bhaskar, The International Food Policy Research Institute quotes, “...It is indeed alarming that not a single state in India is either low or moderate in terms of its index score; most states have a “serious” hunger problem, and one state, Madhya Pradesh, has an “extremely alarming” hunger problem.

We know that the efficacy of reach of the PDS distribution system and the gross misutilisation of grain banks are not to solve the needs of the poor. Here are some tips on how the rural women could do their best within their means and from resources easily available to them.

IRON: This mineral is something rural women are often found deficient in. The deficiency occurs from combined factors of food deficient in iron as well as repeated child deliveries and menstrual disorder not to mention their bodies suffering from poor capability of iron break-down and absorption after ingestion. Much as iron supplements are expensive and hard to remain regular with due to supply issues, it is easy to include seasonal foods in their diet rich in iron. During the long summer months – pumpkin (kaddu, kumdha), pulses or daals and dry legumes like kidney beans, Bengal gram etc are available. During winter months all varieties of beans (french, fava, pinto, broad) are easily available as are peas, sesame (til), groundnuts, soya and spinach are produced in abundance.

The RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) for Iron is approximately 15-18 mg a day. Iron deficiencies can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, decreased ability to concentrate, increased susceptibility to infections, hair loss, dizziness, headaches, brittle nails, apathy, depression, early miscarriages and defective deliveries, menstrual disorders etc.

CALCIUM: The RDA for Calcium in girls up to 19 years of age is 1300 mg per day and for women up 50 years is 100 mg per day. Senior women need 1200 mg of calcium per day. To be able to meet this steep requirement Calcium may be had in the form of Yoghurt/Curd (Dahi Or Mattha), Milk, Cottage Cheese (Paneer), Soya, Chickpeas (Chhole), Oatmeal (Daliya) Cabbage (Pattagobhi), Almond (Badaam), Sesame (Til), Turnip (Shalgum), Ladiesfinger/Okra (Bhindi), Garlic, Onion, Potato, Bananas, Apples, Oranges, Watermelon (Tarbooza) etc.

Deficiencies of calcium could cause frequent bone fractures, risk of osteoporosis, muscle aches, numbness in hands and feet, bone deformities and growth retardation in children.

PHOSPHORUS: Phosphorus works hand in hand with calcium to make bones and teeth strong. It also helps in the production of energy that goes into the hard labour intensive work done in rural areas. Phisphorus goes into the manufacture of and in the formation of genetic material, cell membranes, and many enzymes. It is thus only common sense that rural citizens ensure a good intake of this mineral. Phosphorous can be obtained from the consumption of milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, fish, peanuts, lentils, most beans and legumes, whole wheat (choker-sahit atta) etc.

The RDA for phosphorus is at girls 14 to 18 years old is 1250 mg, women 19 and older - 700 mg, pregnant women - 700 mg and lactating women at 700 mg.

PROTEINS: Proteins are required to execute key body functions like blood clotting, fluid balance, production of hormones and enzymes, vision, and cell repair. Though proteins are found in both animal and plant foods, animal proteins are more easily broken down and assimilated by our bodies. However, animal proteins may not be easily available to women and children in rural areas of India, and so I have provided examples of plant sources. All types of beans, peas, legumes, lentils, chickpeas, soya, nutri-nuggets and nuts are rich sources of protein apart from milk, whey, cottage cheese, curd, brown rice, rye, peanuts and oatmeal (daliya) etc.

Some spices and herbs which rural women use to cook their daily meals and those which offer tremendous healing and curative benefits are:

GINGER (ADRAKH): The chemical Gingerol present in ginger soothes nausea and an upset stomach. It is also a very effective digestive, anti-phlegmatic, anti-pyretic and has strong anti-inflammatory properties. Zingerone present in ginger helps curb diarrhea in infants. Like garlic, it prevents colds and flus.

GARLIC (LEHSUN): In the season of flus and colds, garlic goes a long way in prevention through it's chemical Allicin.
TURMERIC (HALDI): Turmeric is a powerful anti-fungal and anti-bacterial root that doubles up as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent..

CUMIN SEEDS (ZEERA): Cummin is an excellent source of Iron and Manganese and helps digestion. Cumin's potent free radical scavenging abilities strengthens liver’s detoxifying enzymes.

FENUGREEK SEEDS (METHI): Fenugreek is a proven remedy for improving digestion, reducing heartburn and skin inflammation.

Bhopal is chilling, we're experienceing the worst cold in 60 years. To fight that we’re running a campaign called “Garam Vastra Dan Abhiyan” for collection and distribution of Woolen Clothes for Tribal Children and Women.

There are millions of children in our country who don't even get proper clothes to wear. The chilly winters in particular, are like a nightmare for them. You can support our this initiative by donating your new or old(usable) woolen clothes. The woolen clothes donated by you will be provided to the children of tribal villages namely Bodakho and Mahabadia (located near city of Bhopal). You may send us woolen clothes in any Quantity may be 2 or 3 or as per your wish. You can send through courier (It won't cost much). What they need is only the warmth of the woolen clothes gifted / donated by you to them. Support them.

Bhopal,04.12.10.Distribution of clothes,wax colours,soaps & foot wear was made to the children of Primary school,Bodakho,ditt.Bhopal today.There was a phone call from a teacher of this school asking to provide woolen clothes to the children as the winter has approached.He was replied that we won't have woolen clothes.You know what he replied,"Harek bacche ko 2-2 jodi kapade hi de digiyega.Kam thand lagegi.Unhe thand se bacahna hi hamara maqsad hai."

Friends we were speechless and distributed whatever we had.We require woolen clothes.At the momentat least 40 to 60 woolen clothes are required for the children ranging from the age group 5 to 10 years.Even if one people contribute 1 woolen cloth and send by post( whihc does not cost much ) we need support of only 60 people. Can not we do that for this children ???

For today's distribution we are obliged to Mamta Singh who gifted a parcel for these children.

"GRAIN SCHOOL"

Distributed Grain today to the women in lieu of attending literacy classes.This was the 1st distribution. Altogather 4.40 Quintals of Grain was distributed to 19 women while 2 aged widows too were provided Grain.Each one was given 20 kg of wheat.We were fortunate enough as this occassion was witnessed by our friends & IT professionals Ashutosh & Mridula.Mridula (See in photograph above)even gave useful tips for learning.
